This post was supposed to be about Easter but has become more about primitives. Seems I’m drawn to all things old, beat up or rusted and almost every single time I do a search on Etsy or anywhere, I add the words, “primitive” or “rustic” to the beginning. It seems strange, I just can’t help myself!
At least you don’t have to worry too much about anything in your house, another mark certainly won’t hurt it, if it’s even noticed, and as my Mom used to say when something got scratched or marred in some way, “. . .you’ve just made it your own!”

Careful what you wish for. . .

Something our mothers have said to us that we never really understood what they were talking about at the time. . .and then we look back later in life and finally get it!!
I worked and hoped and wished and worked some more and then it happened!! SALES!!! I was getting kind of regular sales but wanted and wondered what it would be like to have twice as many a week or even 10 times as many. I knew I could handle that much business. Wouldn’t it be great if it actually happened by some miracle or act of the Etsy Gods?? Wouldn’t that be great?????
Well, I found out!
Gratefully and happily I must add, I found out right before Christmas what it’s like to have as much and even more business than I could handle and somehow I survived!!!
I found out to the point of almost tears and daily panic attacks and I’m sure if it wasn’t for my wonderful husband who jumped in just when I needed him most I’d still be making and packing up Christmas orders for some very unhappy customers! Now I’m someone who takes my shop owner responsibilities VERY seriously and keeps close tabs on absolutely everything that goes on in my Etsy shop but in the weeks leading up to Christmas as I continued to watch my number of “outstanding” orders rise, the most wonderful and most terrifying moment was when I noticed one evening that I had over 80 outstanding orders, yes 80!!!! The day before I had 60 something and that didn’t seem quite so unmanageable as 80 did.
Anyway, I did survive and came away with a boatload of new ideas and goals and plans for 2013 and how NOT to let this happen again, or at least not in the same way ~ my family and sanity is at stake!
One thing I’d like to say is please don’t think me ungrateful or complaining because quite the opposite ~ I’m always and eternally grateful for every single sale and thankful to each and every one of my customers! It’s because of each one that I’m allowed to do what I love and I know how lucky that makes me.

Kids are back in school, it’s crunch time!

My kids are in college now so they’re hardly ever home anymore which I definitely have mixed feelings about. Even so, I can very vividly recall that elated feeling when school started again and I was free! Almost magically I had time to work. Imagine being happy about that! I remember that the most frustrating feeling in the world was having the work to do, wanting to do it and never having enough time, and some days, no time at all to accomplish anything. Children are a blessing and you’re never quite prepared for how completely they change your life!

Thoughts For Today – Christmas In July Scavenger Hunt!
Oh no! It’s July!

It’s not that I don’t like summer. I LOVE summer but it’s just that now that it’s July and well into the second half of the year my days consist of WORK. Not just work but cramming as much productivity as is humanly possible into each working hour.
It’s not that I haven’t been working, this is my full-time job, this is what I do. As I sit here in my shop, surrounded by thousands of salt dough ornaments in various stages of completion, I realize that now. .
instead of putting in 6 hours of work each day it becomes 8, then 12, then it just goes on and on until my hands can’t take it anymore. I’m not complaining even if it sounds like I am. I love my life and wouldn’t trade it for anything! The life of a craftsperson.

Hello, I’m Kathy and this is my first ever post in my first ever blog.
As the title indicates I am obsessed with salt dough. It’s my career and passion and this blog is a way for me to reach out to anyone who might also be interested.
My entire life has been spent wondering what I wanted to do when I grew up and at 39+ years of age I suddenly realize that I know. Actually I knew 15 years ago when I found a few salt dough gingerbread men in a local boutique and quickly thought of a reason to grab all 4 of them on the shelf.

- This obsession with salt dough immediately became my full-time career and passion. With dozens and dozens of craft shows behind me, I now have an online shop at cookiedoughcreations.etsy.com and a desire to keep making dough ornaments as long as my hands and will holds out.
